RSTAR Robot Shifts Shape to Suit the Terrain

Jul-20-18 The RSTAR robot can change its shape to travel rough terrain or even climb up a narrow pipe.

Developed by a team from Ben-Gurion University with an eye toward search and rescue operations, the Rising Sprawl-Tuned Autonomous Robot (RSTAR) achieves its nimble feats with its set of round and open three-spoked wheels. The wheels are attached to arms angled down and out from the body, which are able to extend and adjust to allow the bot to move in different ways, including climbing vertical pipes or even lurching forward in a ‘turtle walk’ when the terrain is too rough for wheels.
