Saliva-Based Malaria Test Offers Early Detection

Saliva-Based Malaria Test Offers Early Detection
Jan-06-19
The SMAART saliva-based test for malaria can detect the disease up to a week before symptoms appear.

In development by the South African start-up ERADA, the SMAART (Saliva-based Malaria Asymptomatic and Asexual Rapid Test) replaces the more invasive blood tests with a quick and simple saliva sample. The test detects the protein vital to the female parasite’s survival, and can diagnose the disease in patients with the likelihood of developing malaria within one week. In addition to being less stressful for the patient, the test is also more accurate than current options, eliminates the risk of accidental exposure, and can be administered outside of the clinic—such as in schools.
