Scoby Edible Packaging

Scoby Edible Packaging
Jul-05-18
An edible packaging made from kombucha offers an eco-friendly alternative to plastic.

The material was grown by Polish design student Roza Janusz by adding sugars and agricultural waste to a base of kombucha in a shallow container. The edible membrane of biocellulose forms after about two weeks, and can be harvested to package items like herbs or instant meals. The fermented Scoby material has a long shelf-life, and can be cooked right along with the food it contains—offering a zero-waste packaging alternative.
