Seawater Battery Replaces Heavy Metals

Seawater Battery Replaces Heavy Metals
Dec-22-19
An innovative lithium-ion battery that relies on materials from seawater offers a safer and more ethically sourced alternative to heavy metals.

The battery created by a team from IBM replaces the heavy metals typically used in the cathode with three materials that can be extracted from seawater along with a new type of electrolyte. The result was a battery offering promising results, with an energy density of more than 800 Wh/L and a rapid charging ability of 80 percent within five minutes.

The team is keeping the details of the battery’s makeup close, and have partnered with Mercedes-Benz and other companies to commercialize the technology.
