See-Through Solar Panels

See-Through Solar Panels
Feb-04-16
A transparent coating recently developed by Ubiquitous Energy could turn smartphone screens into solar power collectors.

Conventional solar panels tend to be dark, since darker materials can absorb more visible light, and therefore not transparent. In contrast, the coating created by the MIT spinoff is made up of organic molecules able to absorb light that is not in our visible range, such as the sun’s ultraviolet and infrared rays. This allows the material to remain transparent, and makes it very promising for use in displays as well as windows and cars.

The Ubiquitous Energy team hopes to achieve a 10 percent efficiency with the material when the technology is fully developed.
