Self-Destructing Batteries Power Transient Electronics

Self-Destructing Batteries Power Transient Electronics
Aug-10-16
An innovative new battery design that dissolves in water could bring us closer to transient electronics that can simply dissolve when no longer needed.

Created by a team at Iowa State University, the lithium-ion battery consists of a polymer composite that will dissipate in about thirty minutes when placed in water, dispersing the battery’s nanoparticles as the electrodes break up. The transient battery is the first of its kind able to demonstrate a reasonable amount of stability as well as power, and is able to power a desktop calculator for around fifteen minutes.
