A prototype self-destruct mechanism for phones can destroy the device within seconds via a remote trigger.
Created by the team from KAUST, the technology involves a polymer layer that will expand quickly to seven times its volume when heated to more than 80°C, crushing neighboring parts. The heat, which is generated by battery-powered electrodes, can be triggered by sensors (such as a pressure sensor that would detect tampering) or a smartphone app. In one instance, GPS technology triggered the self-destruct when the phone was taken from a specified boundary.
