Self-Healing Bio-Concrete

Self-Healing Bio-Concrete
May-25-15
Researchers have created a self-healing bio-concrete that uses bacteria to repair cracks before they can grow too large.

Developed by a team at Delft University, the concrete has been mixed with pellets of dormant bacteria (Bacillus and/or Sporosarcina) and calcium lacate, their food source. When cracks form in the concrete and allow water to enter, the pellets dissolve—causing the bacteria to become active and begin feeding. As they feed on the lactate, the bacteria produce limestone, which subsequently fills the cracks.
