Self-Heating Battery Battles Cold Weather

Self-Heating Battery Battles Cold Weather
Jan-21-16
Electric vehicle owners and drones may soon be traveling further in winter, thanks to a self-heating lithium-ion battery able to warm itself automatically in cold weather.

Created by a team from Penn State, the battery was designed to address the battery power loss caused by freezing temperatures. The battery is fitted with a temperature sensor and thin sheet of nickel foil that attaches to the negative terminal. The other end of the foil reaches outside the cell, creating a third terminal. If the temperature reaches below freezing, the temperature sensor will trigger the current to re-route through the foil, creating resistance heat that will warm the battery’s interior until it reaches a safe level.
