Researchers have created a self-heating car battery that can recharge quickly even in freezing conditions.
Developed by a team from Penn State, the battery could be particularly useful in bringing more electric vehicles to colder climates, since typical lithium-ion batteries cannot be quickly charged at temperatures below 50°F.
The new battery from Penn State is equipped with a bit of thin nickel foil that attaches to the negative terminal and extends outside the cell to create a third terminal. When the ambient temperature falls to around 77°F, a temperature sensor will trigger a circuit to flow through the foil, causing electrical resistance that heats the foil and warms the battery. Then, when the temperature reaches above 77°F, the system will automatically divert the current, so that flows into the battery and charges it.
