A self-powered triboelectric auditory sensor could help overcome some of the obstacles of social robotics.
One of the main goals of social robotics, in which robots are able to interact with humans, is to enable robots to recognize and respond to the vocal intonations in a verbal instruction. To that end, the team from Chongqing University create a self-powered triboelectric auditory sensor (TAS) equipped with tiny membranes that vibrate with sound waves to power the device. The TAS system also monitors the changes in the membrane vibration to create a complete image of the sound—no external power required.
