Self Sanitizing Keyboard

Self Sanitizing Keyboard
Jan-09-12
The self sanitizing keyboard from Vioguard uses ultraviolet light to kill harmful micro-organisms in seconds.

The keyboard, which recently received FDA approval, looks and feels the same as a standard computer keyboard. To engage the cleaning cycle, the keyboard protracts into a light-tight enclosure which bathes it in the UV light. It can be retracted for use by the wave of hand over the motion sensor.

In clinical tests at a pediatric hospital, the keyboard was found to be about 67% effective at eliminating bacterial contamination.

It's a clever idea, and very appealing, but 67% is a little underwhelming in terms of effectiveness.

Lauren,

Actually that 67% study was completed following a flawed protocol where in a portion of the tests the keyboard was swabbed for organisms after it was used but BEFORE it was allowed to run through its cleaning cycle. This was done to recreate conditions where one person used the keyboard and then another person comes along immediately behind them to use it afterwards. However, with a cleaning cycle of less than 90 seconds when the system is used as intended and allowed to clean after every use then the effectiveness will be 99.99%, which is the efficacy that the device was FDA approved at.
