Sensors Let Smartphones Sniff out Bad Meat

Sensors Let Smartphones Sniff out Bad Meat
Jun-27-18
Smartphones could soon be sniffing out rotten food, with the help of a new gas sensor incorporated into an NFC tag.

The small, nanostructured sensor is able to detect biogenic amines (BAs), which are given off by decomposing meat (and give it its foul smell). The sensors were placed in NFCs, which were then located near the meat, where they were able to detect the emitted BAs before a human could smell them. Once a specific level of BAs was identified, the sensors automatically turned on the NFC tags, transmitting the information to an app-enabled smartphone held within four inches of the meat.
