Separating Tumor Cells with Sound

Separating Tumor Cells with Sound
Jul-07-18
A new liquid biopsy method separates tumor cells quickly using sound.

Developed by researchers at MIT, Duke University and Nanyang Technological University, the liquid biopsy technology can separate circulating tumor cells from a whole blood sample quickly and accurately using only sound. To accomplish this novel method, the teams created a standing wave inside a microfluidic device, which filtered the larger, stiffer tumor cells with an 86 percent efficiency in less than an hour.
