Shallow-Water Bouy Helps Predict Tsunamis

Shallow-Water Bouy Helps Predict Tsunamis
Nov-28-19
A shallow-water buoy able to detect small movements in the seafloor could offer an early warning of earthquakes and tsunamis.

The patent-pending seafloor geodesy system developed by a team from the University of South Florida features a high-tech, shallow-water buoy equipped with GPS. The buoy’s pitch, roll and heading information is measured by a digital compass, capturing data on the side-to-side motion of the Earth that can be used to predict powerful, tsunami-creating earthquakes.
