A new type of yarn has been designed to have an exaggerated response to temperature so that it expands to create insulating pockets when the temperature goes down and flattens out in response to warming temperatures so you can leave your jacket on indoors without overheating.
While conventional clothing is comfortable within a 10- to 15-degree temperature range, the shape-shifting material increases the range to 20 to 30 degrees, using no batteries, no wires, no sensors.
Starting with an outdoor garment, the company is now looking at indoor clothing as a way to save energy. It would be like adding a sweater without the inconvenience of changing clothes.
