ShapeShift Table Brings Touch to Virtual Reality

ShapeShift Table Brings Touch to Virtual Reality
Jul-23-18
The ShapeShift table from Stanford University adds a sense of touch by creating 3D objects in time to VR simulations.

The ShapeShift table is equipped with a matrix of 7mm square rods able to raise or lower and create an item that mimics an object in the VR simulation. The system is on wheels, so it can move and give the impression of objects larger than itself. Although the ShapeShift works at a low resolution, the system could be improved to offer higher resolution, and can also be scaled up to create entire rooms with changing features, such as stairs or pillars.
