Shelly Turtle Bot Fights Robot Abuse

Shelly Turtle Bot Fights Robot Abuse
Mar-16-18
The innovative Shelly robotic tortoise teaches kids not to abuse robots.

As robotic tools become more common, so does the likelihood of a child (or adult) abusing them—an act that can have both financial and cultural consequences.

To help teach kids to treat robots with respect, a team from Naver Labs and Seoul National University developed Shelly, a robotic tortoise that will retreat into its shell if treated badly. Designed for groups of children thirteen or under, Shelly can play games and respond to touches, but can also detect impacts and being lifted from the ground. If the bot is ‘startled’ by such rough treatment, it will retract into its shell, essentially becoming no fun to play with and helping deter abuse to robots.
