Shockbox Sends Impact Info to Smartphones

Shockbox Sends Impact Info to Smartphones
Dec-02-12
The Shockbox system allows coaches to check the severity of an athlete’s head injury from a smartphone, letting them if the player needs additional attention.

The Shockbox system attaches to the top or inside of most helmets, including football, hockey and snow sports, and contains a rechargeable battery and an accelerometer that detects impacts to the head. If the impact is significant, the device will send the data via Bluetooth to a Blackberry, iOS or Android smartphone, where the custom app calculates the forces behind the impact and advises the user of the possibility of brain injury.

The app will also guide the user through a checklist of symptoms and includes a list of contacts, including the player’s family, in case emergency attention is required.
