Shrink Wrapped Samples Need No Refrigeration

Shrink Wrapped Samples Need No Refrigeration
Mar-11-18
Researchers have created an innovative and affordable way to transport medical samples without refrigeration.

Typically, blood and urine samples must be refrigerated to survive the journey—which can be expensive in remote or impoverished areas. To offer a way to protect samples without refrigeration, a team at Washington University added a nanoporous material to the sample, which protected the biomarkers' molecules by ‘shrink wrapping’ them in crystals. The sample was then dried on standard laboratory filter paper and mailed for analysis, with no refrigeration required.
