Silk and Gold Bandage Seals and Heals

Silk and Gold Bandage Seals and Heals
Nov-03-18
An innovative new bandage made of silk and gold could replace stitches and promote healing.

The laser-activated nanosealant (LANS) bandage was created by a team from Arizona State by mixing a biocompatible silk solution with gold nanorods. After the sealant is applied to the wound, a laser is used to heat the gold nanorods and active the silk, triggering the silk to gently ‘interdigitate” with the tissue to create a seal. The heated gold also cools quickly, reducing any damage to the tissue from the heat, and tests proved the new material to be both stronger and more conducive to healing than standard sealants.
