Silk-Based Implant Helps Bones Heal

Silk-Based Implant Helps Bones Heal
Apr-24-18
An innovative new silk-based polymer helps heal damaged bones with less risk of infection and inflammation.

Developed by a team from the University of Connecticut, the material is made up of a combination of spider silk and polylactic acid, a biodegradable thermoplastic made from cornstarch and sugar cane. The resulting composite is strong enough to bear the weight of the body while remaining flexible, and will degrade naturally over time, with no further surgeries required.
