An innovative new material with the flexibility of rubber and the strength of metal was inspired by human skin.
The team from North Carolina State University created the material by wrapping gallium metal fibers with an elastic polymer sheath. The result was a material both flexible and very strong, able to stretch up seven times its original length instead of snapping. The material is still in the proof of concept phase, but the team believes it could eventually have applications in soft robotics or special-purpose textiles.
