A skin patch able to turn white fat brown could help rid the world of love handles.
The patch was developed by teams from Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and the University of North Carolina to offer an alternative to injections or oral medications, which can affect the whole body. In contrast, the microneedle patch is loaded with the fat-burning drugs embedded within microscopic nanoparticles. The patch can then be applied to a specific area, targeting the white fat cells only where needed.
Besides helping people lose weight, according to co-leader of the study Dr. Li Qiang, “What's much more important is that our patch may provide a safe and effective means of treating obesity and related metabolic disorders such as diabetes."
