SkinHaptics Puts Device Control in the Palm of the Hand

SkinHaptics Puts Device Control in the Palm of the Hand
Apr-12-16
The SkinHaptics system uses ultrasound to turn the skin of the hand into an interactive display extension for electronic devices.

In development by a group led by the University of Sussex, the SkinHaptics system sees a network of ultrasound inducers applied to the back of the hand. Using “time-reversal” processing, the system sends ultrasound waves through the hand, which become more targeted as they move through the back of the hand and end at the palm. This allows the user to “feel” the actions of interacting with the device on their skin, without making actual contact with the device.

According to the team, as devices continue to get smaller, companies will be looking for more ways to extend displays and controls.
