Skynet Drone Delivery System Catches Packages in Nets

Skynet Drone Delivery System Catches Packages in Nets
Nov-18-14
The Skynet system concept would see drones dropping deliveries in purpose-built nets, helping to alleviate some of the public's fears about drones flitting about and dropping packages on children and pets.

The Skynet system was designed to address some of the challenges around drone deliveries, such as lack of a proper landing pad for apartment dwellers, by directing the drones to package-catching nets. The design team, a pair from Australia, determined a way to use GPS to guide the drone near the proper net, where LEDs on each of the net's corners will then allow the drone to triangulate its position. Once the drone is in place (about three feet above the net) a sensor built into the drone would identify the net as the proper one for delivery before dropping the package in a container that can locked.

Although still in the concept stage, the team is now working on a prototype version of the Skynet system for entry in the Drones for Good competition.
