The conceptual Skyshelter.zip can provide shelter for disaster victims and other displaced people while requiring much less space than standard temporary shelters.
Winner of the 2018 eVolo skyscraper competition, the Skyshelter.zip can be transported in a box to the site and anchored in place, and then extended to full height via a large, internal load-bearing helium balloon. The exterior walls would be made of a nanomaterial based on ETFE foil and embedded with solar cells, while a balloon on top of the structure could be used to harvest and filter rainwater.
According to the team, the structure would be light enough to be transported by helicopter, offering much more range than those that require trucks, and the height could be controlled by the amount of gas in the elevating balloon.
