Slug-Inspired Surgical Glue

Slug-Inspired Surgical Glue
Jul-31-17
A surgical glue inspired by a common slug could offer an alternative to less effective or potentially toxic adhesives.

Developed by a team at Harvard, the glue is inspired by the Dusky Arion slug, which secretes a mucus that secures it in place when threatened by a predator.

The biocompatible “tough adhesive” is made up of a hydrogel with an adhesive outer layer of positively charged polymers. These polymers will adhere strongly to most surfaces, creating a secure bond even when wet. According to the team, the hydrogel glue can attach to the body’s tissues with a strength comparable to natural human cartilage.
