Smart Apron Rings the Dinner Bell For You

Smart Apron Rings the Dinner Bell For You
Nov-03-12
A new "smart apron" does more than protect your clothes from stray bits of sauce and flour—it also lets your dinner guests keep track of the status of the meal.

Developed by Smart Design’s Interaction Lab, the Smart Apron concept is part of the Apron Alert project and was designed to improve the shared kitchen experience. Featuring XBee radios attached to Lilypad Arduinos, fastening or unfastening the apron’s magnetic clasps triggers a signal that is relayed to the server and then sent to anyone following the Apron Alert account. Putting on the apron sends the message that cooking has begun, and taking it off signal that the meal is ready.

The automatic alert system makes it easier to coordinate meal times with groups of people who may be scattered in different nearby locations.
