A smart bandage able to dispense medication as needed could help treat chronic wounds.
Developed by a team at Tufts University, the prototype bandage is made up of medical tape, a heat-activated gel and flexible electronics. Sensors within the bandage detect temperature and pH levels, which are indicators of infection and inflammation, triggering the bandage’s heating elements to activate and cause the gel to release antibiotics into the wound. The bandage would be inexpensive to make and disposable, though the microprocessor control could be removed and reused.
