Smart Bandage Eyes Wound Healing

Smart Bandage Eyes Wound Healing
Mar-02-19
A smart bandage that monitors healing with optical sensors could both improve patient care and reduce healthcare costs.

Developed by a team from Nottingham University, the dressing is embedded with optical fiber sensors able to monitor biomarkers that indicate wound healing, such as temperature and humidity. This healing data is transmitted to an opto-electronic unit for evaluation and then wirelessly to paired devices, allowing caregivers to check on the status of the wound without needing to remove the bandage.

The original focus of the bandage was to help treat chronic wounds caused by diabetes, which result in thousands of lower limb amputations each year.
