Smart Bandage Glows to Stay in Place

Jul-06-17 A novel smart bandage helps speed wound healing by glowing to indicate the wound’s current health.

Although chronic wounds need to be checked for healing progress, removing the bandage opens the risk of infection. To help keep the bandages in place, a team of Swiss researchers embedded the material with specialized molecules that will fluoresce when exposed to certain pH levels—which indicate if a wound is healing normally. The glow can be sensed under ultraviolet light, allowing the wound to remain undisturbed as much as possible.
