Smart Crosswalk Keeps Pedestrians Safe

Smart Crosswalk Keeps Pedestrians Safe
Mar-01-19
An app-enabled, light-embedded crosswalk could help prevent pedestrian accidents—particularly at night.

The system was developed by researchers from the Korea Institute, and relies on a variety of sensors and electronics to warn cars of people in the road. A thermal imaging camera will detect people as they approach, trigging a row of LEDs embedded in the road. As the vehicle nears the crosswalk, an electronic sign will blink a warning.

Pedestrians are warned of fast-approaching cars by an image projected on the ground, as well as an audible alarm. For added safety, the pedestrian's phone will also vibrate and sound an alert.
