In a ‘soft hardware’ breakthrough, researchers have created textiles that communicate with each other using light.
The smart textiles, from a team at MIT, were developed by embedding high-speed optoelectronic semiconductor devices (including LEDs) inside fibers. Those fibers were then used to create soft, washable fabrics that were able to communicate in a way using light. According to the team, the innovation may prompt the creation of a “Moore’s Law” for fibers, with the capabilities of the fibers growing quickly and exponentially over time in the same way as microchips.
