Smart Headphones Warn Pedestrians of Cars

Smart Headphones Warn Pedestrians of Cars
Dec-09-19
A pair of smart headphones able to detect the sound of approaching vehicles could help reduce pedestrian fatalities.

The prototype headphones developed by the team at Columbia University feature an array of miniature microphones that detect ambient sounds near the wearer. That data is processed by companion app that relies on machine learning to identify the sound of an oncoming vehicle, triggering an audio alarm designed to alert the wearer. The system requires little power, and is affordable enough to be commercialized once the technology is refined.
