Smart Hydrants Listen for Leaks

Smart Hydrants Listen for Leaks
Nov-29-18
An AI-powered smart hydrant system able to detect leaks could help reduce water waste in municipalities.

Developed by a team from the University of Waterloo, the AI system detects leaks in water pipes via an array of inexpensive hydrophones that can be installed in existing hydrants without interrupting service. With a little help from machine learning algorithms, the hydrophones will listen for the specific acoustic signature of water leaks to detect leaks as small as 17 liters per minute.

The team is currently field-testing the system as well as working to improve the system so that it can indicate the specific location of the leaks.
