Smart Insoles Warn of Impending Ulcers

Smart Insoles Warn of Impending Ulcers
Oct-07-19
A smart insole able to track minute temperature changes could help prevent diabetic skin ulcers that can lead to amputation.

Created by Linh Le and commercialized by the spinoff Bonbouton, the insoles are equipped with an array of sensors that detect pressure and temperature changes on the sole of the foot. The insoles can be worn inside regular shoes, where they will continually monitor for signs of inflammation and send an alert to a paired smartphone if an impending ulcer is detected. This early warning system offers more time for treatment—helping prevent the ulcer before it even forms.
