Smart Lens Focuses with a Blink

Smart Lens Focuses with a Blink
Jul-30-19
A soft, biomimetic contact lens controlled by blinking allows the wearer to zoom in and out on demand.

The lens was created by a team from the University of California San Diego and the Harbin Institute using dielectric elastomer films that can be deformed to adjust focus. Although the proof-of-concept lenses are not yet ready to be worn by humans, volunteers wearing electrodes near the eye were able to change the focus of the lens by blinking. The team is now working to make the components smaller so the lenses can be comfortably worn.
