Direct write technology can be used to create smart machine components that alert users to damage and wear.
The technology, from teams at the United Technologies Research Center and UConn, involves using an advanced form of 3D-printing called direct write technology. This method relies on an extruded metal ink that can be used to create conductive lines able to function as sensors and detect a damaged part. The damage, which would alter the current, can be assessed by engineers via real-time voltage readings without the need to disassemble the whole machine.
