A smart mat able to detect temperature differences in the lower limbs could help reduce the chance of ulcers and amputations in diabetic patients.
Created by a student team from Jackson State University, the mat is based on the group’s observation that high glucose levels in blood will affect lower limb circulation, causing the feet and legs to have a lower temperature than the rest of the body. To monitor their circulatory health, patient simply stand on the mat with both feet while the system detects their different temperatures, then sends the information to companion app.
According to Jann Butler, a student on the team, "If there's a four-degree difference between the two [feet] over a period of time, the lower one would be at greater risk of ulceration."
