Smart Mouthguard Senses Exhaustion

Smart Mouthguard Senses Exhaustion
Jun-28-18
A smart mouthguard biosensor can detect when an athlete is over-tired or dehydrated.

Developed in cooperation by NextFlex, UCSD and Xerox’s Parc development lab, the proof-of-concept mouthguard is equipped with an electrochemical sensor system that relies on chronoamperometry to detect analytes in saliva that indicate early signs of dehydration as well as mental or physical exhaustion. The information is transmitted to a paired smartphone in real-time, and the sensors can be swapped out to detect other analytes.
