Smart Needle Penetrates Properly

A smart needle able to detect pressure change will automatically target specific areas in the eye.

Targeting specific areas in the eye when administering injections can be difficult, and require a trained clinician. To simplify the process, the team from Brigham and Women's Hospital created a needle that will detect the change in pressure when it reaches the fluid underneath the sclera—an area in the eye said to be the most unforgiving for injections. The needle will automatically stop when the pressure change is detected, ensuring it does not travel too deep and damage underlying tissues.

The development team believes the needle technology could also be used to deliver drugs to other hard-to-target areas.
