Smart Speaker AI Listens for Heart Attacks

Smart Speaker AI Listens for Heart Attacks
Jun-20-19
A new AI system could listen for signs of cardiac arrest through our smart speakers and call for medical help.

As smart speakers become more ubiquitous in homes, their ‘always listening’ mode can offer more than a subtle sense of being watched. Using an algorithm developed by a team at the University of Washington, these speakers could also listen for the sounds of a cardiac arrest during sleep. Such episodes cause agonal breathing, which occurs in 50 percent of people suffering from cardiac arrests, and tests with the device showed a 97 percent accuracy rate in detecting such breathing even in speakers placed up to 20 feet away.
