A solar-powered smart stop sign will detect approaching vehicles and flash a warning to help prevent accidents.
Many traffic fatalities occur on rural roads, where stop signs can blend in with the darkness of night. To help reduce these accidents, a team from the University of Texas San Antonio developed an inexpensive sensor system able to detect the speed and direction of approaching vehicles. When a vehicle is within range, a signal beacon on the sign will begin flashing to warn them on the intersection.
The system is solar-powered, so can function completely off-grid, and also costs much less than similar systems, with an estimate of up to $100 per unit compared to the current costs of as much as $5000.
