A smart wristband able to communicate with a smartphone could help usher in a new generation of health and environmental monitors.
While typical health monitoring wristbands only track a few parameters, the prototype wristband is equipped with a microcontroller, microfluidic sensor, and a Bluetooth module, which enables it to count blood cells and transmit the information wirelessly to a paired smartphone. Though the current version requires the blood samples be obtained through a separate pin-prick process, the team believes microneedles could be added to the wristband to offer continuous monitoring.
The device could also be easily modified to detect and measure different kinds of health biomarkers, and possibly airborne particles, offering researchers a new way to collect data remotely.
