A smartphone app able to diagnose sleep apnea could offer a more convenient alternative to expensive sleep labs.
Typically, diagnosing sleep apnea requires specialized equipment and a staff to operate it. However, the new app from the team at Ben-Gurion’s University of the Negev could allow the patient to diagnose their condition at home. The app first creates a vocal sound pattern of the user while they are awake, and then monitors the sounds of the user breathing while asleep.
Although the app is not as detailed in its measurements at the lab-based versions, it is able to accurately identify obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and allow users to track their sleep apnea therapy effectiveness.
