Smartphone-Controlled Insulin Delivery

Smartphone-Controlled Insulin Delivery
Oct-17-12
The JewelPUMP insulin delivery device has been touted as the most secure remote-controlled medical device on the market.

Developed by the Swiss company Debiotech, the JewelPUMP can carry a week’s supply of insulin and works with the company-created, Android-powered JewelCOM phone. The phone features an integrated glucose meter and a dedicated SIM card for communication with the pump, and can operate for seven days on a single eco-friendly battery. A temperature sensor in the pump warns the user if the insulin is being exposed to too much heat while a separate sensor is able to detect if the JewelPUMP becomes disconnected from the cannula patch. If the phone is lost, insulin can still be delivered by operating the buttons on the pump itself.

The JewelPUMP has recently been cleared for worldwide release.
