SMARTWheel Designed to Discourage Distracted Driving

SMARTWheel Designed to Discourage Distracted Driving
Mar-10-13
The SMARTwheel was created to encourage safer driving habits, and was invented by a group of students between 12 and 18 years old.

Designed as an aftermarket steering wheel cover, sensors embedded within the SMARTwheel are able to detect position of the driver’s hands on the wheel. Its focus is mainly teenage and inexperienced drivers who may be tempted to text or make calls while driving. If sensors determine the wheel is being held in an unsafe way, such as one-handed for too long, the device will sound an alert while also flashing red lights.

The SMARTwheel can also send the hand-position data to parents, employers or law enforcement in real time.

I designed very similar, but improved in many ways, design, and even send it to Ford , and GM Company. Fortunately, they rejected my idea. Here is concept: I named it Stress Driving Control. It is coupled with sensors on steering wheel, which will measure level of drivers stress level during drive, and also the time of how long hands (one or both) are not on steering wheel. It will alarm with light, than sound signal, and if driver doesn't react, it will slowly reduce speed of the car on acceptable level, but below 30 mph. If the drivers hands are both off the steerings, it will stop the car but in interaction with driving situation (road condition, position on line etc.) There are some other improvements in my design.
