A soft contact lens able to monitor both glucose and intraocular pressure could help patients with diabetes and glaucoma track their condition.
Although smart monitoring contact lenses are not necessarily new, previous versions have been made of rigid materials and embedded with wires, which do not make them practical for daily use. In contrast, the soft smart lens from a team at UNIST features flexible, transparent materials such as graphene sheets and metal nanowires. A wireless antenna transmits the real-time data and powers the device, and the glucose sensor and intraocular pressure sensor can be used simultaneously without interfering with each other.
