Soft Drone Avoids Crash Damage

Soft Drone Avoids Crash Damage
Jul-26-18
An innovative insect-inspired drone will go soft on impact to reduce crash damage.

The deformable drone was created by a team from EPFL taking inspiration from the structure of insect wings. A stretched membrane makes up the arms, which are held stiffly between a pair of metal plates. The arms will support the drone as it flies, but will bend and flex on impact to prevent damage if the drone crashes.

According to the team, the hybrid drone overcomes the limitations of working with stiff structures—which can break under force—and flexible structures that can’t hold much weight.
